These launches also ran at the same times as
before and charged the same fairs. The Hillier Street pier
belonged to another party and Tang Man Hing paid for the
use of it. These launches lost money and the service was
discontinued. This was about 1900.
·
A casual service was then carried on by Chinese and,
about 1900 another service was started by a German Fira
Lauts Wegener & Co. They ran a service from a pier near the
Westem Market belonging to a Chinese owner to a free Govemment pier at the side of Public Square, Yau-ma-ti, also employing four launches running at regular intervals (more
or less) and charging the same fares. They had no reserve
launch. They also lost money.

In 1902 Wong Lan Sang started running four launches with one reserve launch in opposition to the German line. These launches ran in the day time from a pier at Jubilee
Street erected by Wong Lan Sang for the purpose to a pier at Market Street, Yau-ma-ti, which he also erected for the purpose and at night from Jubilee Street to a pier near
A different Square Street hired by him for the purpose.
pier was used at night on the Yau-ma-ti side because other launches and junks used to tie up to the Market Street pler at night making it very inconvenient passengers to embark
and dis-embark at night time.
At this period the only other service was the German service save that casual launches occasionally engaged in
the service for want of other occupation.
The service started by Wong Lan Sang was carried out
by four launches running at regular intervals commencing at
5 a.m. and finishing at 11.30 p.m. in Summer and 5.30 a.m.
to 11.30 p.m. in Winter.
